Flat GIMP icon Theme V 2.1 by android272 Flat GIMP icon Theme V 2.1 by android272
The Flat GIMP icon Theme was created to modernize GIMP and keep people focused on their art.  I have heard it all over the web that GIMP is ugly and I wanted to change that.

I personally like Darker themes but others Like lite themes, many people asked for a smaller theme just like GIMP comes with so I made those to. I think that GIMP is an amazing program that many people don't even give a change because it does not look a pretty as Photoshop.

special thanks to :iconknozos: maker of the DPixel theme for help with theme,  :iconzzdas: maker of the minimo for small theme text, Eckhard M. Jäger maker of the ProGimp theme for the idea of colored icons, :icondoctormo: maker of PsIcons themfor getting rid of tool box lable and help with gtkrc, :iconmigf1: for some help with making v2 of my theme, Mirek2's flat icon concept from LibreOffice and the GIMP dev team. all of you really helped make this theme.

Check out my interview with the Jupiter Broadcasting crew over on YouTube and here me talk about this theme.  Big thanks to them for letting me on the show.  If you do not already know about Jupiter Broadcasting and are a big nerd you should go check them out here or on their YouTube Channel here.

# Instillation
# =========================================================

Just extract the .zip and place it under the  GIMP themes folder:

* Linux: Copy the Theme you want and the Decor folder into ~gimp-2.8/themes

* Mac: Copy the Theme you want and the Decor folder into Aplications > Right Click Gimp and select Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources > Share > gimp > 2.0 > themes

* Windows: Copy the Theme you want and the Decor folder into C:\Documents and Settings\{YourUsername}\.gimp-2.4\themes or C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\themes\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\themes\

NOTES:  11-16-2014: I have completely rewrote these 8 themes. You now will get along with the 8 icon themes a folder called "Decor". This folder needs to be placed in your Themes directory in-order for V2 and on to work.  Icons and gtk.rc files have been moved there to conserve data for you. V1 was very memory inefficient. All the icons are now located in a icons folder in the "Decor" folder and all themes link to it instead of having their own set of icons.

I am moving to major.minor.patch versioning of Flate GIMP icon Theme. Current version is now 1.0.0. So now you can check back and see if I have made an update. To find out what version you have the zip file will have the version, you can also find this in the read me that comes with the Theme.

I added icons for GIMP 2.10 but commented them out in the imagerc. so if you are using GIMP 2.10 you can uncomment out the unified transform tool, warp tool, align horizontal fill(hfill in doc) and vertical fill(vfill in doc).

I have also been updating some icons here and there. The crop tool, free select tool and others have all been updated. So check back often I may release a silent update.

Hello android272,

this is a really great theme, thanks so much. I had the same problem as some of the other commenters, in the meaning that the theme did not go all dark, but the theme is too beautiful to let go of this. After much tinkering with GtkNotebooks, installing gtk-engines, reading the entire comments section again, installing Migf1's theme and analysing the latter I found out what helped: I added 'engine "clearlooks' {  }" into 'style "gimp-default-style" ' in chrome_color.rc and - boom! everything was dark. My system, by the way is, Ubuntu 14.04 running Gnome 3.10.
Thanks again for your theme! I enjoy it very much.

Edit: filename added

Oh my goodness thank you so much. I have not had any time to look into and troubleshoot this.

Ok what the heck. I just downloaded my theme added the themes like I instruct everyone, select a theme and when I start GIMP back up it will not open till I rename the theme I selected.  I had none of these problems when I released version 2.1 of this theme. I have been planing on resimplifying it again to get ready for when ever the devs come out with GIMP 2.10.

Did you mean to say that you just added the line:

'engine "clearlooks' {  }"

or

engine clearlooks {  }

to themes/Decor/chrome_color/chrome_color.rc

Oh, sorry for the mixed-up quotation marks. For the following my reference will be Dark GIMP Orange small, as it is the one I worked on. The line should look like this:

    engine "clearlooks" {  }

and it is INSIDE the

    style "gimp-default-style"

As for the crash: When you comment out the includes in the gtkrc file one at a time you can single out that the crash is caused by the imagerc file. In this you need to de-comment line 21 and make it look like this:

pixmap_path "$HOME/.gimp-2.8/themes/Decor/"

With starting gimp in the console I got some error messages of certain images not found. I don't remember exactly what I did to reduce the errors to a manageable number, I think I found a thread at gimpforums.com where it was suggested to remove lots of lines concerning the states of the icons, for which i used "grep -v". But all what was left could be done with renaming and copying two or three image files, one of which had a plural-s in the filename, but not in the imagerc (or the other way round), so really a minor error. If you like, I can send you my now crash-free imagerc file by e-mail.

Disclaimer: I just started tinkering, having no previous experience or knowledge in GTK or GIMP theming. So if it doesn't work on your system, don't expect qualified answers ;)

Edit: for easier testing look at my reply to NicolasVisceglio's comment

Thank you for clearing up the engine "clearlooks" {  }

I have sent you a PM with my email. It would be great if you would send me your imagerc file.

In Ubuntu 14.04 lts Gimp doesn't start anymore after rebooting of the system. A restore to a point before the installation of the skins was the only way to recover Gimp.

I had the same problem, but instead of restoring you can just set the theme in ~/.gimp-2.8/gimprc to "Default" or "Small". Then it should start again.

Sorry I just saw this comment.  So the thing you should do if you think that a theme is the case of GIMP not opening or crashing is to rename or delete that theme and try to open GIMP again.  Would you please go into the Experimental folder and try the "Darker GIMP_Orange NEW" or "working" themes? Let me know if GIMP opens after you load either of these themes.

Aha... Those two new ones doesn't seem to make any kind of mess: Gimp restarts. I like the small ones. Maybe is that, I don't know.
The darker new is light. The working one is darker, but the zoom icon is broken and only works with mouse over.

Hello. Cools staff for gimp. I use your icon set with default gimp Pro theme and it's awesome but it looks quite stretched on my mac book pro. I think because of retina resolution. Have you planned the image set for Hi res displays?

I would love for my theme to work on all resolutions.  I am not sure if this is something I can take care of with the way I make my designs or if it is for the GIMP team but I know that the GIMP team is working on this.  I do have a theme that might look good on your system, if you download my theme and look in the Experimental folder try the working theme.  This theme has some experimental things that I was working on the last time I worked on my  theme.  This theme has .SVG icons instead of .PNG icons, I would be very interested in knowing if this theme works on your system.  Unfortunately Windows does not understand .SVG icons so I still use .PNG icons so that more people can use my theme.  Fortuitously the GIMP team is working on making .SVG icons available for the Windows platform, and when they do my theme will use .SVGs once again.

Would you try this out for me and tell me if this fixes your problem or not?

Hiya!
Thanks so much for this theme and the work you've put into it!
Recently installed it, and some of the nav bars are white: imgur.com/a/839RY
The folder setup I have right now is in the album as well. I'm using single window mode right now; could that be an issue?
Thanks again!

Still present in multiwindow mode.
Maybe look at some of the other themes (e.x. gimpstuff.org/content/show.php…) And see what they did?
Thanks again for the theme :)

This is great!! Thank you for your time to build this. I love Gimp but think that sometimes when people look at it for the first time they see the awful default icon set and get turned off or think of it as amateurish. I'll feel better showing it off to all my PS user friends now :)

:D people has thousand complains about FREE software and looks only for a second version of photoshop. Its so useless and unfunded all that teenager chat

"The Flat GIMP icon Theme was created to modernize GIMP and keep people focused on their art"

true. I work for long time with 2d and 3d software, coded myself software and know that a dark interface is the best choice, when you work almost day and night to make a living of your art. Bright interfaces are best for Text editors, but even there, writers likes high-contrast themes than killing white interfaces.
I like Gimp v
ery much and use that app extensively. The colorful, happy icon theme is very nice and distinctive for Gimp. The cute icons are by no means distacting, its the overall bright interface, when ever.

How do I get the theme to load automatically at startup? I selected one of the lighter themes and clicked OK and the theme loaded. Then I closed gimp and the default theme loaded up.  When I opened Theme settings it showed the Lighter theme as selected and I have to click "Reload Current Theme" for it to work again.

So this theme does not always work the same way on every computer.   For example some people select my theme and when they close GIMP and try to reopen it GIMP never opens. What they have to do is delete or rename my theme and then GIMP will open for them. Others have reported that when they reopen GIMP that some icons don't show up or even that the tab colors turn white for no apparent reason.

Could you tell me what version of GIMP and what Operating System you are running?  Then could you go into the Experimental version and copy those themes and tell me if they work or persist to be broken? These two themes are my current working set that will be a latter version.

I got it to work just by editing the gtkrc file and using direct path to files required. As an example:

(line46) include "/home/usucapiao/.gimp-2.8/themes/Light GIMP_Orange/imagerc"                    # Icon Resource File
(line47) include "/home/usucapiao/.gimp-2.8/themes/Decor/Decor/size/default_size.rc"            # Sice Resource File
(lin48)   include "/home/usucapiao/.gimp-2.8/themes/Decor/Decor/chrome_color/chrome_color.rc"

Original file was:

(line46) include "imagerc"                    # Icon Resource File
(line47) include "../Decor/size/small_size.rc"            # Sice Resource File
(line48) include "../Decor/chrome_color/chrome_color.rc"        # Chrome color Resource File

Everything working fine.
Hope it helps who may find trouble.
BTW, thanks for this theme, it really saves GIMP from de vanilla theme.

Could you change the paths to Ex. "~/.gimp-2.8/themes/Light GIMP_Orange/imagerc"? the "~" is short hand for /home/your_user_name/.  This could be a way to make it work for most people.  Unfortunately I do not think this will work for Windows and Mac users as windows has a completely different file structure and I believe the .gimp-2.8 is stored in a different location under mac.

Thats strange.  I don't understand why this is. The original theme uses relative paths, using a "~" is the same thing as a full path so it really should not matter.

Hey. Nice work! Love the theme. But I can't get the dark themes to apply properly. As seen at imgur.com/Fc1kNC4, the docks don't look right at all. Also, the menubar. I'm running gimp 2.8 on windows 8.1 64-bit, and I made sure the Decor folder was in the themes folder. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

That didn't apply well at all. It looked like the default theme. Was I supposed to leave the Decor folder where it was, or place it in the gimp 2.8/themes folder? (And by the way, once I realised I needed the clearlooks.dll and installed it, your original theme was working just fine. :])

Yes. I just tested them. It affects all the dark themes.
Also, the same thing happens on migf1's modified Clearlooks themes. I tried those just in case it helped to narrow anything down, but they had the same issue.

This is kinda weird, because when I released my themes I had tested them on Windows 8.1 and if my memory serves me well they worked ok. Could you please check that you have installed the gtk2 clearlooks engine on your Windows? It comes with partha's distributions of Gimp, and I've also bundled it with my themes (along with brief instructions on how to set it up for Gimp). The themes of my friend android272 also need the clearlooks engine installed.

Okay. That sorted it. I feel pretty stupid. :-D I hadn't realised it needed the clearlooks engine, and as I have the official Gimp version and not partha's distribution, it wasn't automatically included. Now the dll is in the engines folder, the dark themes work perfectly. Thank you for your help!

I'm having roughly the same problem I see a number of others are with this theme: it loads fine the first time but won't come up when GIMP is restarted. Besides the theme not coming up, GIMP will intermittently seg-fault on startup if the theme is enabled. This seems to be related to the issues MatrixLinx, termnml, dustigroove, keizgon, and tumas04 have reported. Like most of them, on startup I get the following lines when starting GIMP:
/home/caleb/.gimp-2.8/themes/Darker GIMP_Orange/gtkrc:46: Unable to find include file: "imagerc"
/home/caleb/.gimp-2.8/themes/Darker GIMP_Orange/gtkrc:47: Unable to find include file: "../Decor/size/default_size.rc"
/home/caleb/.gimp-2.8/themes/Darker GIMP_Orange/gtkrc:48: Unable to find include file: "../Decor/chrome_color/chrome_color.rc"
After it starts, if I Go to Edit » Preferences » Theme » Reload Current Theme the theme comes up just fine. The seg-faults appear pretty random to be, it bombs about 1 out of 3 startup attempts, and just re-running it till it starts seems to work. If I set a different default theme it does not crash.

I am using the latest download of the package from this page, have placed the Decor and Darker GIMP_Orange folders in ~/.gimp-2.8/themes. I'm using GIMP 2.8.14 on Archlinux.

I'm happy to provide further detail and test things but at this point I am unsure what else would be relevant or what to even try. The number of people that have experienced something similar leads me to believe it is a fault with this theme, but I don't know what it would be.
