The Flat GIMP icon Theme was created to modernize GIMP and keep people focused on their art. I have heard it all over the web that GIMP is ugly and I wanted to change that.
I personally like Darker themes but others Like lite themes, many people asked for a smaller theme just like GIMP comes with so I made those to. I think that GIMP is an amazing program that many people don't even give a change because it does not look a pretty as Photoshop.
special thanks to
maker of the DPixel theme for help with theme,
maker of the minimo for small theme text, Eckhard M. Jäger maker of the ProGimp theme for the idea of colored icons,
maker of PsIcons themfor getting rid of tool box lable and help with gtkrc,
for some help with making v2 of my theme, Mirek2's flat icon concept from LibreOffice and the GIMP dev team. all of you really helped make this theme.
Check out my interview with the Jupiter Broadcasting crew over on YouTube and here me talk about this theme. Big thanks to them for letting me on the show. If you do not already know about Jupiter Broadcasting and are a big nerd you should go check them out here or on their YouTube Channel here.

Just extract the .zip and place it under the GIMP themes folder:
* Linux: Copy the Theme you want and the Decor folder into ~gimp-2.8/themes
* Mac: Copy the Theme you want and the Decor folder into Aplications > Right Click Gimp and select Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources > Share > gimp > 2.0 > themes
* Windows: Copy the Theme you want and the Decor folder into C:\Documents and Settings\{YourUsername}\.gimp-2.4\themes or C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\themes\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\themes\
NOTES: 11-16-2014: I have completely rewrote these 8 themes. You now will get along with the 8 icon themes a folder called "Decor". This folder needs to be placed in your Themes directory in-order for V2 and on to work. Icons and gtk.rc files have been moved there to conserve data for you. V1 was very memory inefficient. All the icons are now located in a icons folder in the "Decor" folder and all themes link to it instead of having their own set of icons.
I am moving to major.minor.patch versioning of Flate GIMP icon Theme. Current version is now 1.0.0. So now you can check back and see if I have made an update. To find out what version you have the zip file will have the version, you can also find this in the read me that comes with the Theme.
I added icons for GIMP 2.10 but commented them out in the imagerc. so if you are using GIMP 2.10 you can uncomment out the unified transform tool, warp tool, align horizontal fill(hfill in doc) and vertical fill(vfill in doc).
I have also been updating some icons here and there. The crop tool, free select tool and others have all been updated. So check back often I may release a silent update.

this is a really great theme, thanks so much. I had the same problem as some of the other commenters, in the meaning that the theme did not go all dark, but the theme is too beautiful to let go of this. After much tinkering with GtkNotebooks, installing gtk-engines, reading the entire comments section again, installing Migf1's theme and analysing the latter I found out what helped: I added 'engine "clearlooks' { }" into 'style "gimp-default-style" ' in chrome_color.rc and - boom! everything was dark. My system, by the way is, Ubuntu 14.04 running Gnome 3.10.
Thanks again for your theme! I enjoy it very much.
Edit: filename added
Ok what the heck. I just downloaded my theme added the themes like I instruct everyone, select a theme and when I start GIMP back up it will not open till I rename the theme I selected. I had none of these problems when I released version 2.1 of this theme. I have been planing on resimplifying it again to get ready for when ever the devs come out with GIMP 2.10.
Did you mean to say that you just added the line:
'engine "clearlooks' { }"
or
engine clearlooks { }
to themes/Decor/chrome_color/chrome_color.rc
engine "clearlooks" { }
and it is INSIDE the
style "gimp-default-style"
As for the crash: When you comment out the includes in the gtkrc file one at a time you can single out that the crash is caused by the imagerc file. In this you need to de-comment line 21 and make it look like this:
pixmap_path "$HOME/.gimp-2.8/themes/Decor/"
With starting gimp in the console I got some error messages of certain images not found. I don't remember exactly what I did to reduce the errors to a manageable number, I think I found a thread at gimpforums.com where it was suggested to remove lots of lines concerning the states of the icons, for which i used "grep -v". But all what was left could be done with renaming and copying two or three image files, one of which had a plural-s in the filename, but not in the imagerc (or the other way round), so really a minor error. If you like, I can send you my now crash-free imagerc file by e-mail.
Disclaimer: I just started tinkering, having no previous experience or knowledge in GTK or GIMP theming. So if it doesn't work on your system, don't expect qualified answers
Edit: for easier testing look at my reply to NicolasVisceglio's comment
I have sent you a PM with my email. It would be great if you would send me your imagerc file.
The darker new is light. The working one is darker, but the zoom icon is broken and only works with mouse over.
Would you try this out for me and tell me if this fixes your problem or not?
Thanks so much for this theme and the work you've put into it!
Recently installed it, and some of the nav bars are white: imgur.com/a/839RY
The folder setup I have right now is in the album as well. I'm using single window mode right now; could that be an issue?
Thanks again!
Maybe look at some of the other themes (e.x. gimpstuff.org/content/show.php…) And see what they did?
Thanks again for the theme
"The Flat GIMP icon Theme was created to modernize GIMP and keep people focused on their art"
true. I work for long time with 2d and 3d software, coded myself software and know that a dark interface is the best choice, when you work almost day and night to make a living of your art. Bright interfaces are best for Text editors, but even there, writers likes high-contrast themes than killing white interfaces.
I like Gimp very much and use that app extensively. The colorful, happy icon theme is very nice and distinctive for Gimp. The cute icons are by no means distacting, its the overall bright interface, when ever.
Could you tell me what version of GIMP and what Operating System you are running? Then could you go into the Experimental version and copy those themes and tell me if they work or persist to be broken? These two themes are my current working set that will be a latter version.
(line46) include "/home/usucapiao/.gimp-2.8/themes/Light GIMP_Orange/imagerc" # Icon Resource File
(line47) include "/home/usucapiao/.gimp-2.8/themes/Decor/Decor/size/default_size.rc" # Sice Resource File
(lin48) include "/home/usucapiao/.gimp-2.8/themes/Decor/Decor/chrome_color/chrome_color.rc"
Original file was:
(line46) include "imagerc" # Icon Resource File
(line47) include "../Decor/size/small_size.rc" # Sice Resource File
(line48) include "../Decor/chrome_color/chrome_color.rc" # Chrome color Resource File
Everything working fine.
Hope it helps who may find trouble.
BTW, thanks for this theme, it really saves GIMP from de vanilla theme.
Also, the same thing happens on migf1's modified Clearlooks themes. I tried those just in case it helped to narrow anything down, but they had the same issue.
